It is important to seek regular periodontal care at least two times
a year. The gum tissue and bone serve as both an esthetic and functional
component of our mouths. If not cared for properly bacteria can
build-up eventually leading to gum tissue that may be red or swollen,
bleeds easily, pulling away from the teeth, bone loss, and eventually
tooth loss. If it has been over a year since your last cleaning,
possible treatment will include either Periodontal Scaling (deeper)
or Root Planning and Scaling (requires anesthetic).
In some cases if you are diagnosed with periodontal disease you
may require a specialized cleaning that allows removal of bacteria
and build-up from the tooth root. In this procedure local anesthetic
is given around the teeth to minimize any discomfort during the
procedure. A small scaling instrument or ultrasonic cleaning device
is then used to remove the deposits around the teeth. Finally the
roots are smoothed or planed to restore them as much as possible
to their original shape. In certain cases other procedures may be
utilized to control periodontal disease.
